Today in History

On this day, 21 March in 717, the Battle of Vincy, near Cambrai in the modern département of Nord, was fought between Charles Martel and the Austrasians on one side and the king of the Franks, Chilperic II, and his mayor of the palace, Ragenfrid, on the other. The battle was part of the Frankish civil war going on at the time. The blow dealt to the king at Vincy allowed Charles to pursue the fleeing king and mayor to Paris eventually taking the city. Charles would later proclaim Chlotar IV king of Austrasia. Vincy is now called Les Rues-des-Vignes.
