Ants build living towers that flow like a fountain in reverse

An ant is pretty dumb, a whole colony of ants can manage some amazing feats though simply by working together following some simple behavioural rules. 
 
 
In this case they can construct a tower out of their own bodies around plants after water has receded, so they can stay safe until an underground nest can be built.


The tower sinks over time, as ants at the bottom are pushed out, so more ants are perpetually climbing around the outside to the top in order to keep the tower upright.
