Hoverfly (Eristalinus aeneus)

Another great example of my fascination with dipteran eyes is this Eristalinus aeneus also found on the California buckwheat (Eriogononum fasciculatum) at Shoreline Park in Mountain View.

Eristalinus aeneus is a native European species but is now fairly widespread in North America.

Members of this family have either spotted or striped eyes but this is not a defining features for this genus.
