Dandruff is a common problem that could occur with the scalp of people. The causes for dandruff could be fungal or yeast infection, unclean habits, dry skin, oily skin or effect of the use of chemical hair products. The person suffering from dandruff will have a dry and itchy scalp. This could get worse during the winter months. Dandruff could also be a cause for hair fall too. There is a number of over the counter products for curing dandruff. But since they could contain chemicals it is not a good option to use them. Then you would have to turn to home remedies for a cure. Apple cider vinegar for dandruff is a good option to work with. Using apple cider vinegar for dandruff has a number of benefits.

  • Apple cider vinegar contains both acetic and malic acids in addition to powerful enzymes. These compounds act as anti-fungal and antibacterial arresting the infection which is the cause of dandruff.
  • Due to constant itching, the affected scalp area could get inflamed due to the presence of dandruff. Apple cider vinegar’s anti-inflammatory property helps in reducing the irritation of the skin.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar With Fenugreek

Fenugreek is one of the common ingredients found in kitchens. It’s used in stopping hair fall, as a conditioner is well known. This is attributed to its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It also contains protein and nicotinic acid which aids hair growth. Lecithin present in fenugreek helps in making the hair soft and giving it a silky feeling. Thus when used along with apple cider vinegar it makes a great combination to stop dandruff on the scalp.


  • 3 to 4 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar


Soak the fenugreek seeds in water overnight. The following morning makes a paste out of the fenugreek seeds. Add the apple cider vinegar to it and stir well. Divide your hair into partitions and apply this paste on the scalp. You can use a hair brush or use your hand for the same. Once you have covered most of the scalp area, leave it to dry for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse it off with some warm water.

You can do this procedure 1 to 2 times a week for a month. If the dandruff is severe you could try it out every alternate day.

2. Yogurt And Apple Cider Vinegar for Dandruff

Yogurt or curds contain proteins and vitamin B5 which is beneficial for healthy hair growth. Its antibacterial property helps in arresting the spread of dandruff. Since yogurt is very soothing to the skin it helps in containing the irritation of the scalp.


  • ½ cup of yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar


Take the yogurt in a dish and add the apple cider solution to it. Mix it up well to make a paste out of it. Before applying it on the scalp wash your hair and shampoo it. Next, apply this paste all over the affected area on the scalp. Leave it for around 15 minutes. Next, wash your hair with room temperature water.

You can use this paste once a week when you wash your hair. You should use the natural yogurt or curds for the same. Using flavored or sweetened yogurt will not be effective and irritate the skin.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar for Dandruff With Tree Tea Oil

Tree Tea oil is found to be effective in the treatment of the fungus Malassezia which could be one of the causes for dandruff. By combining tree tea oil and apple cider vinegar you get double benefits in the treatment of scalp dandruff.


  • ½ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup of water
  • 5 drops of tree tea oil
  • 2 cotton balls


Take the apple cider vinegar solution in a bowl. Add the water and tea tree oil to it. Mix it up well. Dip the cotton ball into the mixture and apply it all over the scalp. Part your hair and try to reach the scalp directly. Once done leave it for around 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with warm water. You can shampoo your hair after this.

This procedure could be tried every alternate day if you have severe dandruff. Once it has reduced you could apply it once a week.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar and Essential Oils

This concoction uses lemongrass, lavender oil, and rosemary oil. These essential oils have medicinal properties and help in restricting the fungus growth which is the cause of dandruff. They have antibacterial property too and help in treating the infection.


  • ½ cup of apple cider vinegar solution
  • ½ cup of water
  • 4 to 5 drops of lemon grass oil
  • 4 to 5 drops of rosemary oil
  • 4 to 5 drops of lavender oil
  • 2 cotton balls


Take the apple cider vinegar solution in a bowl. Add the water to it and mix it up well. Next, add all oils and stir well. Take a cotton ball and dip it in this solution. First, wash your hair and shampoo it.

After washing your hair with shampoo apply the liquid on the scalp evenly on the affected area.

Leave it to dry completely. Rinse your hair with warm water.

Continue this procedure every week to reduce dandruff on the scalp.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey

Honey contains a number of minerals and vitamins. It is used in hair treatment effectively. When combined with apple cider vinegar the medicinal content is further increased bringing in double benefits.


  • ½ cup of warm water
  • 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar solution
  • 3 tablespoons of raw honey
  • 1 shower cap
  • 1 spray bottle


In a dish mix the warm water and apple cider vinegar solution thoroughly. Add the honey to it and mix it up properly. Pour the final solution into a spray bottle. Partition your hair and spray the liquid on the scalp. Ensure that you cover all the area of the scalp. Once done, cover your scalp with a shower cap. Leave it for around 15 minutes. Rinse your hair with warm water.

Repeat this procedure every week till the dandruff is got rid of.


Before using apple cider vinegar for scalp check to see that you are not allergic to it. This can be done by spraying it on a patch of your skin and looking for any reactions. If the skin becomes irritable do not use it. Always use organic and raw apple cider vinegar solution. Maintain a clean comb and wash it regularly with vinegar. Try not to use any chemical based hair products. Keep your stress levels under control and eat healthy food. Thus by using a simple home remedy like apple cider vinegar, you can do wonders for your hair.
