First contact: Incredible images show lost Amazonian tribe living like their ancestors did 20,000 years ago - and firing SPEARS at photographer in his helicopter

These are the incredible images showing an isolated tribe in the Brazilian rainforest still living like their ancestors did 20,000 years ago.

They were spotted by photographer Ricardo Stuckert as he took a helicopter ride over the Amazon jungle with one man even firing his spear at the snapper.

A storm had caused his helicopter to deviate from its route but it allowed him to capture the amazing snaps.

Hiding among the trees: Photographer Ricardo Stuckert captured the pictures of the Amazonian tribe who had previously been uncontactable

And the images, in an exclusive for National Geographic, give a glimpse into the indigenous tribe living near the border with Peru, in the Brazilian state of Acre, which is thought to have several hundred members.

Many of the tribespeople appear to be wearing colourful body paint as they peer up at the camera through the trees.
One picture shows a man attempting to string what appears to be a bow with another man running holding a large knife.

In all of the the pictures, the tribespeople can be seen looking confused as the helicopter soars overhead having been kept away from modern life.

However, Mr Stuckert told National Geographic that the people appeared more inquisitive than fearful.

He said: 'I felt there was a mutual curiosity, on their part and mine. I felt like I was a painter in the last century.

'To think that in the 21st century, there are still people who have no contact with civilisation, living like their ancestors did 20,000 years ago – it’s a powerful emotion.'

The Amazon rainforest on the Brazilian border of Peru, Bolivia and Colombia is thought to be home to around 100 tribes who live in isolation from the modern world.

And although Brazil enforces a 'no contact' policy towards the indigenous tribes, they are often threatened by encroachment from illegal loggers.
